When I make an instrument that has been commissioned by a musician, I start by discussing extensively his or her preferences for sound, playing qualities, feel of the instrument and final appearance. This is then the basis for selecting together the best wood and the ideal model to achieve the desired playing and sound characteristics. The varnish also has an impact on the sound quality. I make my own from scratch on the basis of old Italian recipes and it can be applied to give a new or an antiqued finish.
At the end of the build process I take as much time as needed for the final sound adjustments to make sure the musician is completely happy with the result.
Some players may instead prefer to purchase an existing instrument. They feel more comfortable being able to try out one or more instruments before actually committing to one. Please get in touch if you would like to try instruments I may have available.
